Mesut Ozil Reveals Reason Why He Chose Real Madrid Over Barcelona in 2010 Transfer
Mesut Ozil has revealed that a potential move to Barcelona back in 2010 fell through because of then manager Pep Guardiola.
The Arsenal midfielder explained that the current Manchester City boss chose not to attend negotiations over bringing him to the Camp Nou and failed to even contact Ozil by phone, prompting the Germany international to opt for Barca’s bitter rivals Real Madrid instead.
The sensational revelation was made by Ozil in his upcoming autobiography, serialised by German newspaper Bild, as the 28-year-old recalled the moments that led up to his Real Madrid transfer, after the 2010 World Cup.
With the snippet from his book quoted by the London Evening Standard, Ozil goes into detail about just how his move to the Bernabeu came as a result of Guardiola’s decision not to contact him personally – an event that Ozil says put him off playing for Barcelona at the time.
He wrote: “Arsenal were interested in signing me after the 2010 World Cup, as were Manchester United, Bayern Munich, Barcelona and Real Madrid.
“My agent sat down with Bayern to discuss a move. The club told him about their plans with me and how they intended to use me. He had similar talks with the other clubs that wanted me.
“Before I travelled to Barcelona, I was convinced that was my next club. I was leaning toward joining Barcelona. There was no team in the world that played more beautiful football.
“But Guardiola did not attend talks and he did not call me either the days after. He did not even send me a text. He did not show me that he wanted to sign me as well. My interest in a move to Barcelona quickly decreased.”
Ozil eventually joined Real in a £10m transfer from Werder Bremen in August 2010 but, after finding regular game time at a premium throughout his time in Spain’s capital, made a £42m move to the Premier League with Arsenal in September 2013.
Ozil has helped the Gunners pick up two FA Cups during his spell in London, but the attacking midfielder is now said to be considering his future at the club despite being offered a new contract.
The ex-Schalke youth product is believed to be waiting on manager Arsene Wenger’s decision to sign his own new deal or not and, providing neither commits their future to Arsenal, the North Londoners may look to sell Ozil for fear of losing him for nothing in 18 months’ time.Follow GuyFancy
