Manchester United Could Install Jose Mourinho as Manager Before End of February

Manchester United could replace current manager Louis van Gaal with former Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho before their next home league game with Arsenal on February 28, according to The Sun.

United fell to a 2-1 defeat at Sunderland at the weekend and Van Gaal hinted in his post-match comments that it would be very difficult for his side to reach the top four come the end of the season. They sit six points behind Manchester City with 12 games to go, while Arsenal, Tottenham and leaders Leicester sit further clear.
He admitted following Saturday’s disappointment: “It shall be very difficult now because we give five points away, against Chelsea and here now so it’s too much at this time.”

The club have their worst-ever points total at this stage of a Premier League season as it stands, with 41 from 26 games, and their disappointment is compounded given how much money Van Gaal has spent since the start of his tenure. The club had been ready to stick with the Dutchman through until the summer but word after the latest defeat is that United’s decision-makers are now convinced a change is the right move to make.

Van Gaal himself appears to be aware that his days at Old Trafford are numbered, as The Sun reported that he refused to take up a six-month lease on his newest house in Bowdon. Instead, the former Barcelona coach is paying more for the privilege of leasing his latest property on a rolling contract – which he’ll be able to cancel at a month’s notice.

He has cut a dejected figure at times and while he insisted he’s ready to fight on after the Sunderland defeat, United now appear ready to turn to former Chelsea man Mourinho.
