Jose Mourinho Responds to Man Utd Move for Neymar Among Rumours of £173m Summer Bid

Jose Mourinho has scoffed at suggestions that Manchester United could end up signing Neymar, and said it would be “impossible” to even attempt to do so.

The Red Devils have been mooted as a potential destination for the Barcelona superstar this season, with the latest gossip to do the rounds suggesting that an eye watering £173m bid is due to be made by the Premier League side for Neymar’s services.

However, speaking to ESPN Brazil (via Goal) about his side’s chances of luring Neymar to England, Mourinho quickly dismissed any notion that the forward would trade the bright lights of Catalunya for England and stated that any plausible attempt to sign him would be “like trying to break into a safe”.

He said: “I always try to be objective and pragmatic with the clubs and ask the clubs what can be given to me. Neymar is absurd. A club like Barcelona cannot and will not lose Neymar.

“Although [Lionel] Messi is still a young player with years to go, he is already playing well at 30.

“Neymar will be the great player of Barcelona after Messi. I think it [signing Neymar] is like trying to break into a safe. Impossible.”
September 2016 saw the first rumours surrounding a potential Neymar transfer to Old Trafford surface online after his agent, Wagner Ribeiro, claimed that United and Ligue 1 side Paris Saint-Germain came close to landing him during the summer transfer window.

Since then, gossip columns have gone into overdrive over Neymar’s future at the Nou Camp, with varying reports alleging that the 25-year-old would ask his current employers to sanction a move away from the La Liga giants for pastures new.

Media outlets began running the ‘Neymar to United’ story once more from the end of November as the January transfer window loomed into view, despite the player signing a five-year contract extension in October, but Neymar once again remained with Barcelona in spite of all the speculation and conjecture.
