Jose Mourinho Claims Premier League Trio Have to ‘Prove Something’ After Trophyless Season

United boss José Mourinho

Manchester United boss José Mourinho has fired shots towards his Premier League rivals, claiming only Chelsea, United and Arsenal tasted success last season. The Red Devils won the EFL Cup and the Europa League last season, whilst also claiming victory in the Community Shield against Leicester.

Apart from Chelsea, the top four in the Premier League failed to lift any silverware last season and Mourinho believes that Liverpool, Tottenham and Manchester City all need to prove themselves this year, after what he deems to be an unsuccessful season for the three sides, according to Metro reports.

” I think after the champions, Chelsea, I think Manchester United is the second most successful club last season and Arsenal the third. For me that’s absolutely clear,” Mourinho said. “To finish second, third or fourth is like being first, second and third of the last because there is only one winner.

“Arsenal won a competition, we won two-and-a-half, I like to say.

“If someone had to prove something this season it is the ones that won nothing, so they have to improve to win something.”

Mourinho’s comments are clearly a statement of intent from the Portuguese manager, who is eyeing more silverware next season.

Returning to the Champions League was Manchester United biggest goal and despite a sixth place finish in the Premier League, claiming two-and-a-half trophies (as Mourinho puts it) was enough to deem last season a success in the eyes of most United fans.

The Special One’s intent to win more silverware has only been strengthened following the arrivals of Romelu Lukaku and Victor Lindelöf this summer, with Croatian winger Ivan Perišić believed to be Mourinho’s latest transfer target.
