Christian Benteke Reveals What Stopped Him From Being a Success at Liverpool

Former Liverpool striker Christian Benteke has revealed that he doesn’t believe that he should be considered a failure for his time at Anfield, and feels that things could easily have been different had Brendan Rodgers not been sacked after only a few weeks.

It was Rodgers who was in charge when Benteke arrived from Aston Villa for £32.5m, only for the Northern Irish coach to lose his job in October after a run of disappointing results.
Jurgen Klopp then took over and implemented his own new ideas, leaving Benteke to play catch up from the sidelines.
“I don’t see my time [at Liverpool] as a failure,” Benteke told the Daily Mail.
“When I signed there was another coach and with him it might have turned out differently,” the Belgian international explained.

“I did not fit the tactical system of the new coach. That was not easy mentally because I was left to fight a losing battle. But I must not look for excuses. I could also have done better in those few minutes I got. I have not performed as expected.
“He had a particular system and I did not fit in. It was up to me to find a solution. These are things that happen in a career. There are no regrets.”
Benteke, who scored 42 goals in 89 Premier League appearances for Aston Villa before making the switch to Merseyside, has since become the most expensive player in Crystal Palace history and believes his latest move is a good step back in the right direction.
“I am now on a team that might not have the same ambitions as Liverpool, but I can play well and can show me every weekend,” he said.
“Of course my dream continues to break through to play at a big club and in European competitions. But I did not go to Palace with the idea to perform and then move on after one season.”
