The 10 teenagers looking to steal the limelight at Euro 2016

The 10 teenagers looking to steal the limelight at Euro 2016

Of the 24 teams and the 552 players in attendance at this summer’s Euros, just 10 of them are teenagers.

Much has been made of England’s decision to push forward one of the youngest teams in their recent tournament history and – with an average age of 25.39 years – the youngest side at Euro 2016.

That applies more so to the youngest player at the tournament, Marcus Rashford, also in the England camp. It was widely expected that he would be dropped from the provisional squad but Manchester United’s young forward kept his place after impressing in friendlies.

There are just 10 teenagers at the Euros this summer, hailing from a range of countries and nationalities. Switzerland are taking the most though, with three on the plane to France.

Without further ado, here’s a who’s who of everyone under the age of 20 looking to make an impact at Europe’s biggest stage this summer.

If you’re good enough, you’re old enough…

Kingsley Coman
Bayern Munich, France
Age: 19

Busy tearing apart the proverbial Bundesliga rulebook this season, taking Coman to the Euros was a no-brainer. With four goals for Bayern Munich this season at just 19-years-old, expect big things from this attacker in the coming years.

Marcus Rashford
Manchester United, England
Age: 18

The Manchester United youngster has really made a name for himself recently, bagging almost as many goals as shots and netting at clinical times. In his England debut, Rashford scored 135 seconds into the game, while in the Premier League he scored four goals from his first five shots.

Sd Embolo
FC Basel, Switzerland

Age: 19
The FC Basel midfielder has been on the map for a while now, particularly after a €27 million bid from Wolfsburg was rejected. With 10 previous senior international caps, this won’t be Embolo’s first international stage but it will be his first major tournament.

Renato Sanches
Bayern Muni

ch, Portugal
Age: 18
The most expensive Portuguese player to leave the domestic league, Bayern Munich have seen Sanches’ potential already. With only four senior caps under his belt, his international experience is very much unproven – especially as the youngest Portuguese player ever to be called up for international competition.

Nico Elvedi
Borussia Mönchengladbach, Switzerland
Age: 19

Swiss footballer Elvedi, who plays for Borussia Mönchengladbach, has one of the fewest tallies of international caps of all the youngsters playing at the tournament. He did win 58% of his headed duels this season though, so watch out for this guy in the box.

Denis Zakaria
BSC Young Boys, Switzerland
Age: 19

The third and final of three teenagers that Switzerland are taking to the tournament (the most of any team competing) and another player with just one senior cap.

Bartosz Kapustka
Cracovia, Poland
Age: 19

Having stayed at Polish league clubs for most of his career thus far, Kapustka is one of Poland’s brightest teenage prospects and should impress at the tournament, provided Poland do well. He’s also on four international caps.

Ante Ćorić
Dinamo Zagreb, Croatia
Age: 19

The name might be familiar because Ćorić was one of the youngest scorers in Europa League history, scoring for Dinamo against Astra Giurgiu. In 67 league games for the club he’s scored 10 times, a stat diluted by a number of substitute appearances.

Oleksandr Zinchenko
FC Ufa, Ukraine
Age: 19

A product of FC Shakhtar’s youth system, the teenager now plays for Russian league club FC Ufa. Making his international debut in just October last year and now with two senior caps to his name, Zinchenko also became Ukraine’s youngest scorer, overtaking Andriy Shevchenko.

Emre Mor
FC Nordsjælland, Turkey
Age: 18

One of just three 18-year-old players at the tournament, Mor switched allegiances from Denmark to Turkey in 2016 and will be playing in Group D this summer. Teams such as Manchester United, Borussia Dortmund, Ajax and Galatasaray were previously interested in the youngster before he signed at current club, FC Nordsjælland.
